Getting Around Djerba
Djerba has limited public transportation. Renting a car is highly recommended for exploring the island freely. Taxis are available but negotiate fares beforehand. The island is connected to mainland Tunisia by a 7km causeway (Roman Road) and a ferry from Ajim to Jorf. Djerba–Zarzis International Airport (DJE) is 15 minutes from Houmt Souk.

Djerba enjoys a Mediterranean climate with over 300 days of sunshine annually. Summer (June-September): Hot and dry, 28-35°C, perfect for beach activities. Spring (March-May) & Autumn (October-November): Mild and pleasant, 20-28°C, ideal for sightseeing. Winter (December-February): Mild, 12-18°C, quieter season with occasional rain. Best time to visit: April-June and September-October for perfect weather and fewer crowds.
Drinking Water & Food Safety
Tap water in Djerba is generally safe but heavily chlorinated. Most visitors prefer bottled water, which is widely available and inexpensive (0.5-1 TND per liter). Restaurants and hotels use filtered water for cooking. Food safety is generally good in tourist areas. Eat at busy restaurants, avoid street food if you have a sensitive stomach, and always wash fruits and vegetables. Seafood is fresh and excellent, especially in coastal restaurants.
Currency & Money Matters
The official currency is the Tunisian Dinar (TND). ATMs are widely available in Houmt Souk and tourist areas. Credit cards are accepted in hotels, larger restaurants, and shops, but cash is preferred for small purchases and markets. Currency exchange is available at banks, hotels, and exchange offices. It's illegal to import or export Tunisian dinars, so exchange money upon arrival and spend or exchange back before departure. Tipping: 10% in restaurants, 1-2 TND for porters and housekeeping.
Language & Communication
Arabic is the official language, with Tunisian Arabic (Derja) spoken locally. French is widely spoken, especially in tourist areas and businesses. English is increasingly common in hotels and restaurants. Basic French or Arabic phrases are appreciated. Mobile coverage is excellent across the island. SIM cards are available at the airport and shops (Ooredoo, Tunisie Telecom, Orange). WiFi is available in most hotels, restaurants, and cafes. International roaming works but can be expensive.
Cultural Etiquette & Customs
Djerba is predominantly Muslim with a significant Jewish community. Dress modestly outside beach resorts, especially when visiting mosques or traditional areas. Remove shoes before entering homes or mosques. During Ramadan (dates vary), many restaurants close during daylight hours; respect fasting locals. Friday is the holy day; some shops close for midday prayers. Handshakes are common; wait for women to extend their hand first. Photography: Ask permission before photographing people, especially women. Alcohol is available in hotels and tourist areas but not widely consumed publicly.

Djerba is generally very safe for tourists. Petty theft can occur in crowded areas; keep valuables secure. The sun is strong year-round; use high SPF sunscreen, stay hydrated, and wear hats. No special vaccinations required, but ensure routine vaccines are up to date. Pharmacies (green cross signs) are well-stocked with international brands. Travel insurance is highly recommended. Emergency numbers: Police 197, Ambulance 190, Fire 198. Private clinics and hospitals are available in Houmt Souk. Most hotels have English-speaking staff for emergencies.
